  • Sony’s Soneium is a new Ethereum layer 2 blockchain designed for scalability and accessibility.
  • Soneium aims to connect Web3 with everyday internet services, making blockchain technology more user-friendly.
  • Sony plans to launch the Soneium testnet soon, inviting developers and creators to build applications.

Sony has set the ball rolling with its first-ever Ethereum layer 2 blockchain, Soneium, in collaboration with Startale, a Web 3 provider. With a focus on scalability and accessibility, the upcoming blockchain is set to be an amalgamation of entertainment, gaming, finance, and various other possibilities. Soneium aims to connect Web3 with everyday internet services, making blockchain technology more accessible to users globally.

As a layer 2 solution for Ethereum, Soneium builds on top of Ethereum’s layer 1 infrastructure to address issues of slow processing speed and high fees that are common with layer 1 solutions. The Optimism Foundation developed technology that Soneium utilized to create a scalable, EVM-compatible, and developer-friendly blockchain.

Sony Enters the Blockchain World: Launch Soneium 2

By developing the blockchain, which is the underlying infrastructure for Web3, it will be possible to provide comprehensive Web3 solutions from the infrastructure to the application layer, without stopping at providing partial services.

Sony’s Upcoming Blockchain Targets Creators

In addition to building applications for existing Web3 services that will be compatible with Soneium in the future, the Sony group is also exploring new services that can benefit its businesses and attract a wide audience. According to the blog post, the focus is on protecting the creator’s rights, developing new revenue models, and enabling cross-platform activities.

We want to create use cases that can stimulate the interest of people who have never used Web3 services and support the expansion of creativity and engagement with fan communities through Web3 technology. We will work to support creators in expanding their creativity and strengthening their engagement with the fan community. Specifically, we will study the protection of rights to creativity created by creators, new mechanisms for returning profits to support creators and fans, and opportunities for creators to be active across the digital and real worlds.

Furthermore, Sony Group plans to launch the Soneim testnet with Op Stack in the coming days. Developers and creators can start experiencing the development environment of Soneium and start to build their applications on the testnet.
