  • Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) forms a task force to address crypto ATM compliance.
  • Focus on enforcing AML/CFT laws, KYC standards, and transaction tracking.
  • Crypto ATMs in Australia have grown to over 1,300, raising money laundering concerns.
  • AUSTRAC’s approach could serve as a model for global crypto regulation.

Australia’s national financial intelligence agency, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has made cryptocurrency among its top priorities for 2025 by creating a task force to ensure compliance of the sector and prevent the criminal use of crypto ATMs. The move reflects how fast cryptocurrency is becoming quite relevant in the financial world and the ever-mounting perils of its use by knavish actors.

In a statement dated December 6, AUSTRAC Chief Executive Brendan Thomas unveiled the agency’s intensified focus on cryptocurrency. “Cryptocurrency and crypto ATMs are attractive avenues for criminals looking to launder money, as they are widely accessible and facilitate near-instant, irreversible transfers,” Thomas explained.

AUSTRAC’s new task force was purposed to ramp up oversight into crypto ATM operators and make them comply with some of the strict AML/CFT Laws. The main focus is on implementing KYC standards, tracking money transactions, and spotting suspicious actions.

Compliance Challenges for Crypto ATMs

Crypto-ATMs are a facility for exchanging cash for cryptocurrency and vice versa. This is one of the fastest-growing sectors in Australia, and it is relatively new. The leading providers, Coinflip, Localcoin, and Cryptolink, have hundreds of machines all over the country. These kiosks have been convenient for the users but also come with considerable vulnerabilities regarding illicit activities, including money laundering.

Thomas emphasized, “Operations falling short of legal thresholds will face heavy fines and possible criminal charges.”

Australia’s laws impose harsh money-laundering punishments. A violator might risk imprisonment of up to 12 years and above 102,000 AUD fines, just in cases of money whose worth is below 1,000,000 AUD. In cases involving huge amounts of money, penalties might range to 25-year prison service with fines over AUD$ 214,000.

Australia is fast emerging as one of the focal points in the crypto ATM universe. It has now turned out to be the third largest home with over 1,300 machines, reports Coin ATM Radar. This is an acute increase compared to mid-2022, when only 67 such ATMs operated. It was backed by private sector investment and swelling demand.

Crypto Industry Adapts to Australia’s New Rules

Despite such growth, only a portion of 400 registered digital currency exchanges within the country operate crypto ATMs. What this does is make oversight from regulators more manageable but it showcases just how important having a robust regulation against misuse exists.

Attention to crypto ATMs by Australia is consistent with the larger trend of governments around the world determined to regulate the growing cryptocurrency sector. With installations of Bitcoin ATMs led by the United States and followed in second place by Canada, Australia’s proactive approach may set an example for other countries facing similar dual challenges: fostering innovation while mitigating risks.

The AUSTRAC initiative is in itself a balancing act between promoting legitimate crypto use and combatting criminal exploitation. As the adoption of cryptocurrency further spreads, this issue can be expected to be closely followed worldwide as regulators seek to learn from the Australian experience in addressing such complex problems.

This move signals that, in 2025, the crypto industry must be prepared for more significant scrutiny and compliance requirements, making sure it grows responsibly within Australia’s financial ecosystem.
